Sarasota Sheriff's Office to host 27th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service

Sarasota County, Florida -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is hosting the 27th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 16.

The service will be held at 6 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 Beneva Rd., Sarasota. Sheriff Tom Knight encourages the public to attend.

2012 Florida School-Related Employee of the Year announced!

Bartow, Florida -- The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) announced the 2012 Florida School-Related Employee of the Year. This year, the distinct honor goes to Norma Reyes, an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) paraprofessional at Purcell Elementary in Polk County.

LRCC participates in clinical trial for metastatic melanoma

Lakeland, Florida-- Lakeland Regional Cancer Center (LRCC) is proud to have been initiated as the only enrolling site in the eastern United States for a metastatic melanoma clinical trial. 

LRCC is now in the process of screening patients.

The trial, which is developed by OncoSec Medical Incorporated, is designed to assess local and distant objective response following treatment of cutaneous melanoma lesions with DNA IL-12 and electroporation with a primary endpoint of 24 weeks.

Florida Dance Theater to host summer camp

Lakeland, FL – Florida Dance Theatre announces its hosting of its annual Summer Youth Dance Camp starting July 16, 2012.

Students ages 6-10, are welcome to participate in ballet, hip hop, acting, art and more.

Camp is divided into three sessions that are each one week long.

Session dates are as follows:

  • July 16 – 20
  • July 23 – 27
  • July 30 – August 3

Students can sign up for one, two, or three weeks. Each week ends with a performance by the students that is open to family and friends.

Road closure May 29: Lake Hollingsworth Drive

 

Lakeland, Florida-- According to the City of Lakeland, beginning Tuesday, May 29, 2012 the City of Lakeland Public Works Department will close a portion of Lake Hollingsworth Drive to replace a failed storm pipe at the intersection of Fairhaven Drive.

Lake Hollingsworth Drive will be closed from Cleveland Heights Boulevard to Crystal Lake Drive for two days.

Residents will have access to their property at all times and detours will be clearly marked.

Lakeland, Florida-- Kids ages six - 12 can dig deep during the third Dirt Day event from 9 - 11 a.m. next Saturday, May 19.

Parks and Natural Resources presents "Dirt Days" to teach children that "What you grow! It matters."

Saturday's event showcases Master Gardener Miss Ginger, who will teach the first 30 attendees all about the importance of worms in one's garden. 

Afterwards, the children will plant Cypress trees along the shoreline of Banana Lake Park, and even do some fishing.
