3 injured in bar shooting

Lakeland, FL -- Three men were injured in a shooting outside a Lakeland bar early Saturday morning.

According to police, around 1:15 a.m., a fight that began inside the Warehouse Bar, at 3070 New Tampa Highway, spilled outside and at some point someone pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Jamarl Capel, 25, was shot twice, once in the arm and once in the chest; George Degroat, 34, was shot in the leg; and Ellie McGary, 27, was hit with an unknown object in the forehead.

Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Sherrie B. Nickell, Ed.D. has announced the Superintendent’s Partnership Awards for 2011. 

The awards were for individuals, businesses, civic, faith-based, non-profit and community organizations that provided assistance to schools and school district departments during the 2010-2011 school year.  The partners honored provided a myriad of goods, services, donations, mentoring, tutoring or other assistance and showed exemplary support for students, faculty and or administration during the past school year.

Lakeland, FL -- The City of Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department has made special arrangements this year for Santa to phone local children from his workshop.

Santa and his long distance operators will be calling elementary school-aged children on Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Lakeland, FL - The 2011 Lakeland Christmas Parade is Thursday, Dec. 1.

The parade is put on by the Junior League of Greater Lakeland.  This year there are 114 participants with 6 marching bands.  New Lakeland Police chief Lisa Womack will be the Grand Marshal.

The parade follows the traditional route. It starts at the Lakeland Center, goes east on Lemon Street, the north on Tennessee, east on Main street, around Lake Mirror, then follows Orange street back to the Lakeland Center.

In today’s world of a sagging economy, there is a community-based project that is working well and gaining strength in Polk County.  It’s the KIDPACK Polk Project, now operating in 14 Polk County Public Schools (PCPS) and supplying 237 students with support food every weekend.

Lakeland, FL -- Mayor Gow Fields invites local residents to attend the next Mornings with the Mayor event at 7 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 at Fred's Southern Kitchen, 2120 Harden Boulevard Lakeland.

Mayor Fields will make his remarks and take questions from the audience around 7:30 a.m. after they have had a chance to go through the breakfast buffet.

Mornings with the Mayor allows residents an informal and comfortable forum in which to meet with the mayor to talk about issues, ask questions, voice concerns and offer comments or suggestions.
