Polk County, Florida -- Mary St. Denis, a science instructor at Winter Haven High, is a “Teacher at Sea” thanks to the C-IMAGE Gulf of Mexico Teacher at Sea Program. She recently qualified to participate in the projects’ 2013 expedition focused on zooplankton survey and deep ocean sediments.

Lakeland mom shoots son in self defense

Lakeland, Florida -- A 86-year-old woman shot and killed her own son in self-defense. 

On Friday, May 17, a Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy in the Reynolds Road area heard multiple gun shots coming from Orange Blossom Circle and Reynolds Road. 

As the deputy began to investigate the noise, he saw 86-year-old Nancy Pennypacker exiting her residence, and heard her yelling for help.

Students participate Wheelchair Awareness

Polk County, Florida -- Starting Friday, May 17, students enrolled in health science class at Winter Haven High’s Medical Academy will take part in a project called “Wheelchair Awareness.” The project requires students to spend a weekend in a wheelchair. The goal of the project is to help students gain an understanding of what it means to live with physical limitations and help them become more sensitive to future patients who may have physical handicaps.

Polk: 16 arrested in retail theft ring

Polk County, Florida -- The Polk Co. Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of several people connected to an organized retail theft ring.

"Malynda is a real professional. She knows how to successfully steal," said Polk Co. Sheriff Grady Judd when speaking about the alleged ringleader of the group.

Malynda Ford allegedly stole from Beall's, Khol's and Home Depot stores throughout the Bay Area.

Elula Cook, a Lakeland City employee at the Cleveland Heights Golf and Country Club, was also arrested in connection with the case.

550-acre marsh fire burns in Polk County

Auburndale, Florida -- The Florida Forest Service is battling a 550-acre muck fire in Polk County Thursday.

The "Mattie Marsh Fire" as it's being called by fire officials is burning off I-4 between Auburndale and Polk City.

Fire officials say it started last night near County Road 557A. It's cause is not known at this time.

Charges to be dropped against Bartow "bottle bomb" student

BARTOW, Florida - The State Attorney's Office will drop charges against Keira Wilmot if she completes a diversion program for setting off a bottle bomb at Bartown High School.

On April 22, Wilmot admitted to mixing household chemicals in a small plastic bottle that exploded on school grounds.

The 11th grader was suspended from Bartow High School and now attends a school for at-risk youths.
