''Puffer'' machines removed from Polk Courthouse

Bartow, Florida - When Polk County sheriff's officials stepped up security at the courthouse a few years ago, the expense seemed reasonable and affordable.

The county added bomb detecting machines called "puffers," but five years later, the poor economy and machine's unreliability has forced the Polk to get rid of them for good.

Puffs of air strategically placed would detect traces of explosives as one enters the Polk County Courthouse.

"There's a puffer between your knee and your hips and one around your rib cage and shoulders," explains Steve Hood a courthouse visitor. Hood says he never saw the point behind the security system.

"Just seemed like a waste of money to me," says Hood. He adds, "Because it slowed down the line one person at a time. It was just a puff of air."
