Superintendent's scholars have high GPAs, SATs, ACTs

One hundred ninety-two high school seniors were named 2011 Superintendent’s Scholars.

Superintendent’s Scholars have a minimum grade point average of 3.75 and a score of 1270 or above on the SAT (combined critical reading and math) or a 28 or better composite score on the ACT. 

Superintendent’s Scholars will receive an award certificate from Superintendent’s Scholars coordinator, the Polk Education Foundation.  The Superintendent’s Scholar program is in its 23rd year.

Sleepy Hill Elementary's Science Family Night

Lakeland’s Sleepy Hill Elementary hosted its 3rd Annual Science Family Night near the end of the 2010-2011 school year with approximately 350 students and families in attendance. 

The evening was jam-packed with science fun with hands-on science stations visited by attendees.  

Students and guests learned the science of roller coasters, air rocket launches, pink snow, airplanes and kites. 

The event included a robotics demonstration by Sleepy Hill Middle students,  a NASA guest speaker and an airplane from the Florida Air Museum.

The Lakeland Sail and Power Squadron, Inc., a unit of The United States Power Squadrons, will present a FREE seminar,"Trailering Your Boat" on Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.

This free seminar will be held at Certified Marine, 4020 Bartow Rd, Lakeland, FL.

The seminar will cover subjects such as choosing a tow vehicle, hitch and trailer, how to safely and securely tow your boat, and operation and maintenance of your trailering equipment.

Lakeland, FL -- Come out and join some great Family Fun this Thursday, June 2 at Joker Merchant Stadium for the 2nd Annual "Wing Ding".

The Flying Tigers will host a fun evening to raise money and awareness for the Camp Fire USA Sunshine Council. Tickets include 10 wing sample tickets and free beer samples from Budweiser.

Polk County, FL -- June is National Hurricane Preparedness Month and marks the beginning of hurricane season.

According to forecasters, the Atlantic basin is facing a busy hurricane season with an estimated 12 to 18 named storms this year including six to 10 that will become hurricanes.

Lakeland Police Chief Womack will hold monthly "Chief's Chat" with citizens

Lakeland, FL -- Lakeland Police Chief Lisa Womack has announced she will conduct an open forum on the first Monday of each month to give citizens the opportunity to discuss topics of interest in the community.

The forum will be held from 6 - 7 p.m. The first meeting will be held on Monday, June 6.

Community members are invited to attend to get to know better the Chief and the Lakeland Police Department.

Chief Womack will use this forum to introduce herself to the community and share her visions for the Lakeland Police Department as they move forward into the future.
