Mystery donor promises 770-pound woman new home

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- A 770-pound woman who had to be extracted from her apartment for medical care will be getting a new home, thanks to an anonymous donor.

Because of Yvonne Gallimore's size, medical crews tore through a wall of her Section 8 apartment May 19 to transport her to an area hospital to be treated for lymphedema, a condition that prevents bodily fluid from draining. Gallimore's apartment wasn't livable afterward.

An anonymous donor has agreed to work with Habitat for Humanity to come up with a plan for building Gallimore a new home.

A spokeswoman for Lakeland Habitat for Humanity says the mysterious donor is supposedly a relation of a wealthy Florida business family with millions of dollars behind their name.

Five elementary students honored in state Creative Juices Challenge

Five elementary students in Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties used their artistic talent to celebrate Florida citrus and win prizes for themselves, their teacher and their school in the Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC) Creative Juices Challenge.

FDOC launched the challenge in conjunction with “The Adventures of Captain Citrus” school marketing program to educate students about the health benefits of Florida citrus.

Students were asked to submit a poster, painting, poem, story, song or video featuring oranges and orange juice.

“We were amazed at the creative ways that students expressed their ideas about Florida citrus,” Leigh Killeen, FDOC director of marketing said in a release. “It was impressive to see how much they learned about citrus and how they used this information to help others understand the beneficial role of oranges and orange juice.”

Residents are asked to refrain from burning trash, yard debris, campfires and bonfires. If burning cannot be avoided, use extreme caution, have extinguishing mechanisms nearby and do not leave fires unattended.
