Polk deputy named one of nation's 'Top Cops'

The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) presented its list of winners and honorable mentions for the Eighteenth Annual TOP COPS Awards on Friday, May 13. Each year since 1994 NAPO has presented the TOP COPS Awards Ceremony to educate the American public about our nation’s heroes and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year.

The sole winner from Florida was from the Polk County Sheriff's Office - 33-year-old Deputy Sheriff Michael L. Braswell, an 11-year veteran of the agency.

Deputy Braswell and Deputy Sheriff Paul Fairbanks were shot by convicted felon Matthew Tutt during the early morning hours of June 25, 2010. Thanks to his quick actions and his bullet-resistant vest, Deputy Braswell was able to survive the shooting and eliminate the threat presented by Tutt, saving not only lives of Deputy Fairbanks and his own, but ensuring that Tutt did not cause further harm to Polk County's citizens.

Two Polk County Science Fair winners in California at the ISEF International Science Fair: Part II

Two Polk County Science Fair winners in California at the ISEF International Science Fair: Part II

Another great few days here at the Intel ISEF in California.  The weather has been awesome here in L.A. and we couldn't ask for better.

Tuesday was a day for the press to come interview students at their projects and I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by a reporter from Brazil.

Later Tuesday night, we enjoyed an incredible  mixer for the students and adults sponsored by Intel and ISEF.  They were gracious enough to rent out Club Nokia (a nightclub where students only were allowed in), the Conga room (upscale lounge for people 21 and older), Lucky Strike's (a bowling alley), as well as the ESPN building where there was an arcade and bar; all of which are located in the L.A. Live complex in downtown L.A.

It was a great opportunity to meet other students, teachers and parents from around the world. This has truly been an international experience!

Wednesday was a full day of judging that started at 8:30 a.m. and went to 6:00 p.m. with about two and a half hours of breaks in between.  It was exciting to have the opportunity once again to present my project to the judges that have either a Ph.D. or 6 years of experience in the field they are judging.
