Police arrest two in connection with robbery

Lakeland, FL -- Lakeland Police are investigating two street robberies that occurred on Tuesday, April 21.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., police responded to 201 N. Ingraham Ave. after receiving a report of a robbery.

Richard Taylor, 50, of Lakeland, was walking alone in the area when he was attacked by a group of four males that knocked him to the ground, punched and kicked him, and took his wallet and other property in his pockets, and then fled the area.

Taylor received minor injuries as a result of the incident.

Mother pleads no contest in death of 2 year-old

BARTOW, FL -- Ina Brown pleaded no contest Thursday to charges of aggravated manslaughter and neglect of a child, agreeing also to testify against her husband, Marcus Brown, of Lakeland.

Prosecutors say Deondray Ashe, 2, died after Marcus Brown beat him with a belt, nearly 30 times last June.

Investigators said there may have been a red flag two months earlier when DCF first received a report of possible child abuse from the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Easter Bunny visits hospitalized kids

Lakeland, Florida -- Pepsi and the Polk County Sheriff's Office partnered to bring the Easter Bunny to Lakeland Regional's Pediatric Unit again this year, making sure the children get the same holiday experience they would if they weren't in the hospital.

"We started the Easter Bunny here at the hospital six years ago, with Pepsi partnered with Polk County Sheriff's Office, to make sure each kid here in the hospital was given a toy during the week of Easter, says a Pepsi representative in the video above, that LRMC shared with us.

Aerospace Academy Engineering Student Also Excels In The Arts

Lakeland, FL -- Lyudmilla Fuentes, a Lakeland resident and ninth grader at Kathleen High’s Central Florida Aerospace Academy, won a first place award in a National Association of Teachers Of Singing (NATS) competition held in Bradenton.

NATS is Florida-based and considered the largest association of singing teachers in the world,  http://www.nats.org/.

The NATS competition in Bradenton included vocalists from the central and southwest Florida areas from all grade levels, the college level and adults. Lyudmilla won first place in the first year high school female solo category.

Officers chase suspect into family home

Lakeland, Florida-- A Polk County mother is still recovering after a man running from police barged into her home and hid in the bathroom. Lakeland Police along with state investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife division say 20-year old Darrell Hamman was wanted for the alleged theft of a boat and trailer when he was pulled over by undercover officers Tuesday. Investigators say Hamman tried to flee and in the process tried to run over one of the state officers.

FWC and Lakeland Police gave chase before the suspect finally lost control and crashed his pickup truck through a fence and into a tree. He ran into a neighborhood according to investigators and eventually tried to hide in the home of Faline Gilliland.

Three boys go on a rampage in a church

Lakeland, FL -- Three Lakeland boys were arrested by Polk County Sheriff's detectives Tuesday after causing thousands of dollars in damage to a Lakeland church over a three month period.

Salvador Cruz, 12, Eduardo Salazar, 10, and Oscar Salazar, 14, have not only been charged with Burglary, among others, of the church, they are also being charged for their involvement in destructive vandalism of a truck on Monday, April 18.

It all started sometime between 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 and 8 p.m. on Monday, April 18 when unknown suspects forced open the north-side double doors of the New Faith Dimensional Church located at 838 Waneta Ave in Lakeland.
 
Once inside, the suspects went throughout the building ransacking property and intentionally damaging and destroying numerous books and documents in the church office.

The suspects also "tagged" the interior of the church with gang graffiti and broke windows.

'Adopt-A-Senior' assists homeless graduating seniors

'Adopt-A-Senior' assists homeless graduating seniors

Polk County, FL -- Polk Public Schools is seeking the public’s assistance in a program to help approximately 90 graduating seniors meeting the federal government’s definition of homeless. 

The  “Adopt-A-Senior” program is seeking new, donated hygiene and toiletry items to give to these students as graduation gifts.

Although this started out primarily as an in-house school district project, the project has branched out and currently includes churches, professional groups and organizations, clubs and service organizations.
