School board resolution opposes budget cuts, urges legislative action

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County School Board passed an official resolution at its April 12 meeting urging the state legislature and Governor Rick Scott to stabilize state education funding in the wake of proposed education budget reductions.

The resolution will be distributed to the Polk County legislative delegation, Gov. Scott, state Senate President Mike Haridopolos, House Speaker Dean Cannon and the Florida Board of Education. 

The resolution is signed by all seven school board members and Superintendent Sherrie Nickell, Ed.D.

Lakeland, FL -- A Lakeland mother wants answers after a local chain restaurant mistakenly gave her toddler an alcoholic drink instead of orange juice.

Jill Van Heest said it happened March 31, while she was having dinner with her nearly 3-year-old son, Nikolai, and her mother at the Olive Garden along US 98 N in Lakeland.

The mother said she noticed her son was acting strangely and about a half hour after the group had been given their drinks, a waiter came and took Nikolai's drink away, saying there was a mistake.

Polk County, FL -- Starting this Sunday, April 10, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise announced lane closures and construction/maintenance projects in Central Florida.

Florida's Turnpike is notifying motorists to watch for slow moving traffic, and lane closures and traffic shifts next week near the Eastern Mainline Toll Plaza while they work on the Polk Parkway Pace Road Interchange

A SunPass-only lane is being added to the southbound side of the plaza and motorists should be alert for traffic shifts through the plaza.

Winter Haven, FL -- The sheriff's office has charged a Lakeland woman with DUI Manslaughter in the traffic death last October of an 84-year-old Mulberry woman.


Audrey Yutzy, 40, who moved to Lakeland from Mulberry after the crash, was arrested after the FDLE returned lab results that showed she had a blood alcohol content of 0.159, nearly twice the legal limit.

Polk County, FL -- Polk County homeowners and businesses are eligible to apply for low-interest loans to repair damage sustained during the severe weather that impacted the area on March 31.

Polk is included in the disaster declarations resulting from the severe storms, flooding and tornadoes.

Residents who own their own homes, businesses or small agricultural cooperatives located in the disaster area, and who are victims of the disaster may be eligible for financial assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

This year the Flying Tigers are hosting a very fun evening to raise money and awareness for the American Red Cross. Tickets are only $10.00 with proceeds benefitting the American Red Cross Polk and Highlands County Chapter
