Timothy Carey found not guilty of 1996 Polk murder

Bartow, FL -- It took jurors just three and a half hours to find Timothy Carey, 36, not guilty in a 1996 murder case.

Carey had taken the stand in his own defense saying he was at a party the night Tommy Eugene Smith was murdered.

Update: Man ties up elderly woman in her home, steals her car

Auburndale, Florida -- Auburndale Police officers are still searching for a man who tied up a 92-year-old woman in her home but they have found the stolen car. 

Police say Margaret Bair was working in her yard around 9:00 a.m. on May 9 when a man walked up to her door and went inside. The man tried to get Bair to come inside the house with him but she refused.

He then grabbed Bair into the house and tied her up with tape as he rummaged through the home.

Lakeland PD adds 2 non-emergency numbers for public

Lakeland, Florida-- Update: Shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Lakeland Police officials announced that their non-emergency lines had been restored. 

Residents may now use 834-6900 for non-emergency calls to the Police Department. 

Previous information:

An issue with a circuit caused the City of Lakeland's phone system to crash Wednesday morning, and officials say they have since added two non-emergency numbers for the public to use.

High school football coach arrested for child porn

Lakeland, FL -- 41-year-old Coach James Shannon Arnett is married and a father of four. And on Wednesday, he was arrested during football practice at Lake Gibson High School, charged with two felony counts of possessing child pornography.

"We know of at least two children that we are going to talk to, to see if there was any inappropriate contact with them," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, "but we certainly fear that there may be other victims out there."

Lakeland man on trial for murder: 'It wasn't me'

Bartow, FL -- Timothy Carey took the stand in his own defense Wednesday and said he was at a party the night Tommy Eugene Smith was murdered.

Smith was a 37-year-old and a nursing supervisor at Lakeland Regional Medical Center when his body was found during the early evening hours of Oct. 11, 1996.
 
Smith's body was found in an orange grove off Edison and Old Berkley roads, near Auburndale. He'd been shot twice in the head and once in the neck. He had been last seen on Oct. 10, leaving his home around 8 p.m. in his Jeep.
