Bartow, Fla. -- Residents of Bartow and other parts of Polk County can breathe a bit easier if faced with a major emergency.

The Polk County Health Department has been recognized as "ready" if a public-health emergency strikes.

The National Association of County and City Health Officials recently recognized the department, for the second time, for its ability to respond in a crisis.

Lakeland, Fla. -- Lakeland Police Department's next Chief's Chat will be held on Monday, March 5.

This month Chief Womack will provide follow up to last month's discussion about violent crime in Lakeland and ways to reduce it.

The meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Lakeland Police Department, located at 219 N Massachusetts Avenue.

Feed the Children and Naehcy give backpacks and supplies to homeless students

Polk County, Fla. -- On Feb. 21, Feed The Children will provide backpacks and supplies to Pasco County Public Schools and Polk County Schools.

A shipment of 960 backpacks will be delivered to the Distribution Warehouse for Pasco County, 7301 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. in Land O’ Lakes at 8 a.m. A second shipment of 960 backpacks will be delivered to the Jim Miles Professional Building in Lakeland, 5204 U.S. Hwy. 98 South at approximately 11 a.m.

The backpacks will be distributed at a later date to students experiencing homelessness in 15 regional counties.

Bartow, FL -- Gause Academy students recently participated in a crash course in building and repairing computers.  Students and staff from Polk State College (PSC) Collegiate High, and students from Traviss Career Center, visited Gause Academy to guide sixth, seventh and eighth grade students through a Computer Exploration Lab.

According to Gause Academy instructor Angela Price, the exercise involved both academic and business/computer classes.

Benefit concert for fallen officer's family

Lakeland, FL -- On Friday, Feb. 3, the Lakeland Center will hold a "Blast from the Past" concert to benefit the family of Officer Arnulfo Crispin.

The concert features performances by Ken Brady's Casino's, Finese, Lola & The Saints, Johnny Alston's Motown Review and Dani Panic - Michael Jackson impersonator. There will be an after-concert party held at the Avenue Hotel, for a $15 per person donation.

All proceeds will benefit the family of LPD Officer Arnulfo Crispin, who was fatally shot in the line of duty in December 2011.

The City of Lakeland is offering its 11th Annual Citizens Academy to area residents with the first session starting Feb. 23. 

The Citizens Academy is a free, hands-on, interactive public information program that familiarizes citizens with City services and the functions of City Departments. The Lakeland Citizens Academy allows residents to get a behind the scenes look of how City government operates and it provides an outlet for citizen input. The program consists of six (6), two (2) hour evening sessions, one session per month.

Polk County, FL -- January is the month of highest blood usage by patients in Tampa Bay.   In addition, there is a critical need for more minority donors on the National Marrow Donor Program's 'Be The Match' Registry. 

Therefore, 10 News has teamed up with Bealls to sponsor the 10 News Martin Luther King Day Blood & Marrow Donor Registry Drive, on Monday, Jan. 16. 

Florida Blood Services bloodmobiles will be located at the Bealls store location at 3565 Lakeland Highlands Rd. in Lakeland from noon - 6 p.m.
