K-9 bites suspect during arrest in Lakeland
Crime

LAKELAND, Florida (AP) - Police officers say a K-9 named Quanto did what he was supposed to when he saw a suspect struggling with his handler during an arrest. He bit the suspect.

Lakeland police say the incident happened March 16 as officers questioned two Florida Southern College students who were arguing in a parking lot.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports a police review shows 21-year-old Ashley Holmes accidentally pressed a car door opener on the belt of a police officer who was searching him. The officer's door opened and Quanto leapt out and went to aid the officer who was struggling with handcuffed 18-year-old Joanna Youssef.

Police say the dog thought the officer needed protection and bit Youseff.

The review found the officers broke no department policies, and called the bite unfortunate.
