Florida man in murder-for-hire plot dies in prison

LAKELAND, Florida (AP) - A central Florida man convicted of trying to hire a hit man to kill an IRS agent has died in prison.

Randy Nowak was sentenced in 2009 to 30 years in prison. Federal prosecutors said Nowak had agreed to pay an undercover FBI agent $20,000 to kill an IRS agent auditing his Polk County construction company.

Justice Department officials told The Ledger that Nowak died March 12 from cardiopulmonary arrest at a federal prison in North Carolina.

Suspect in officer's murder says he didn't do it

BARTOW, Florida (AP) - A newly released document shows the young man accused of gunning down a Lakeland police officer continued to deny that he had anything do with it - even through five hours of intense questioning.

Prosecutors released a 352-page transcript this week of their interviews with 19-year-old Kyle Williams after the Dec. 18 slaying of Officer Arnulfo Crispin.

Burglars caught robbing church, again

Lakeland, Florida -- A trio of robbers must not have gotten all they came for from a Lakeland church Wednesday. The three were caught in the act Thursday night hitting up the same church again.

According to Lakeland Police, a Community Response Team saw the black pickup truck drive up to the back of Carpenter's Home Church Without Walls around 8:30 p.m. Thursday and force themselves inside the building through a side door.

Lakeland sex attack suspect is just 14

Lakeland, Florida -- On Monday, Lakeland police said the man in a hotel surveillance video was the suspect in a brutal sexual assault Sunday at the Hyatt Lakeland Center.

It turns out that man -- all five-foot-seven, 215 pounds of him -- is a 14-year-old boy.

Police: 14-year-old confesses to Hyatt Hotel sex attack

Lakeland, Florida -- Lakeland Police have arrested a teenager who they say admitted to brutally attacking a woman at the Hyatt Hotel at the Lakeland Center on March 18.

Police say they were able to identify 14-year-old Corey Lee Sutton as a possible suspect in the attack on March 20. Despite his age, Corey stands approximately 5'7" and weighs about 215 pounds, according to detectives.

Police search for violent sexual battery suspect

Lakeland, Florida -- Police are searching for the man who violently attacked a woman at the Hyatt Hotel at the Lakeland Center.

Lakeland Police say the assault happened shortly after Sunday night. The victim, an employee at the hotel, was outside in an employee break area waiting for a friend to get off work.

The victim says a man walked up to her and said, "I'm sorry, excuse me," and then suddenly attacked her.

The suspect went for her throat and choked her until she fell unconscious. When she awoke, found herself being sexually assaulted.
