Polk County Schools names new superintendent

Polk County, Florida -- Today, the Polk County School Board named Kathryn LeRoy the new superintendent of schools. 

Mrs. LeRoy was chosen after school officials say Board members narrowed the list to three final candidates. 

The school district says other individuals considered for the position included Polk County Public Schools' Associate Superintendent of Learning David Lewis and Administrator on Assignment for the Lee County School District Dr. Constance Jones.

Rescued dachshunds find new homes

WINTER HAVEN, Florida --  Remember the nearly 50 dogs, mostly Dachshunds, found stacked in cages filled with urine and feces in an Auburndale home earlier this month?

About a third of them are finding new homes.

Free Driving Classes Now Available

Free Driving Classes Now Available

Polk County, Florida-- The Florida Virtual School (FLVS) and Florida Safety Council are now taking applications for free behind-the-wheel driving lessons and a free in-depth online driver education course. Teenagers ages 14 ½ or older are eligible to enroll, but are not eligible to take the exam for their learners permit until age 15. Students receive general elective credit for completing the course. Upon the completion of the FLVS online course, students are entitled to six hours of free behind the wheel driving lessons in real traffic with the Florida Safety Council.

Off-duty Lakeland cop arrested for battery

LAKELAND, Florida -- A Lakeland police officer has been charged with battery after authorities say he got into a road rage fight while off-duty.

The incident was caught on video. Police say Officer Jerry Monroe was driving with his son when another driver cut him off. That driver, Andy Jones, then pulled into a parking lot, and that's when police say Monroe pushed him and the two started to struggle.

Monroe body slams Jones onto the concrete in the video. Then, according to witnesses and the police report, he repeatedly punched Jones while he was on the ground.

Strong storms knock trees onto houses

Storms continue to push south across , Polk, Highlands, Hardee, Desoto and Sarasota counties.

There have been numerous reports of hail stemming from these storms, and 10 News has learned of trees falling on houses in Seffner and in Zephyrhills. There's no word on any injuries at this time.

Bartow, FL -- The economy is starting to pick-up and the employment landscape is improving in Polk County.

The Polk Works Mobile One-Stop Bus will be outside the Bartow Public Library on May 21st from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The vehicle is a one-stop spot that allows individuals to search for jobs online, prepare resumes and submit applications for open positions.
