PCSO welcomes first female SWAT member

Polk County, FL -- Friday, Jan. 13 was an historic day for the Polk County Sheriff's Office SWAT team as it welcomed its first female member.

Sheriff Grady Judd presented 28-year-old Shanon Demarest, along with 10 men, certificates of completion of the rigorous PCSO SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) training school.

Demarest was one of 20 applicants that included deputies, other agency law enforcement officers and paramedics from throughout the county. Of the 20, 15 attempted to pass the course.

Polk County considers uniforms for high schools

Bartow, Florida - Hemlines too high, pants hanging too low: it's a problem some Polk County parents of high school students want to solve.

One suggestion surfacing at school advisory committees is uniforms for high school students. "They accept it after awhile," says parent Julie Hamilton.

Middle and elementary school kids did. In the late 90's Polk became the first public school district to have a uniform policy for middle and elementary schools.

Polk County Public Schools and the Community Relations Advisory Council of the Board of County Commissioners announced the winners of the 11th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the annual MLK Breakfast at the Bartow Civic Center.

This year’s essay contest topic was “What Does the Dream Mean to Me?”  Students wrote about what Dr. King had envisioned or hoped to see and what you can do today to promote or advance his dream.

MLK Day Blood Drive

January is the month of highest blood usage by patients in Tampa Bay.  In addition, there is a critical need for more minority donors on the National Marrow Donor Program's 'Be The Match' Registry. 

Therefore, 10 News has teamed up with Bealls to sponsor the 10 News Martin Luther King Day Blood & Marrow Donor Registry Drive, on Monday, January 16, 2012. 

Florida Blood Services bloodmobiles will be located, from 12 Noon until 6 p.m., at select Tampa Bay area Bealls stores and Blood Center Donation Centers.

Kathleen Road widening starts Tuesday

Lakeland, FL -- Starting Jan. 17, Polk County will begin widening CR 35A/Kathleen Road from Galloway Road north to Duff Road.

The county says this 3-mile section of Kathleen Road currently operates below standards, especially during evening peak hours.

Improvements include reconstructing the existing two-lane roadway to four-lanes divided by a raised median, with bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

All work is scheduled to be complete by fall 2013.

Polk County, FL -- The Polk County Public Schools Hall of Fame is looking nominations from the community.

Nominees should be individuals who attended a Polk County public school and made significant professional and career contributions in the arts, business, clergy, education, entertainment, government, law, military, media, medicine, science, sports or other fields.
