Lakeland, Florida -- At its meeting June 13 in Lakeland, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) elected Vice Chairman Richard "Dick" Corbett of Tampa to serve as Chairman, effective July 1.

"Dick's passion for preserving our wildlife legacy for future generations is an asset to this Commission," said outgoing Chairman Ken Wright. "He's been an avid outdoorsman since childhood, and understands the importance of introducing youth to nature and creating the next generation that cares."

"Bikes for badges" event at WingHouse in Lakeland

Lakeland, Florida-- On Saturday, June 15, 2013, Sheriff Grady Judd and members of the Polk County Sheriff's Office along with the Bubba the Love Sponge crew will be at the WingHouse of Lakeland, 4515 South Florida Avenue, for another "Bikes for Badges" charity event.

This event is hosted by the BTLS Foundation, the WingHouse, and other sponsors.  All proceeds will benefit the family of PCSO Master Deputy Sheriff Shane Robbins, who was killed in the line of duty on April 26, 2013.

Summer Food Service Program to offer free meals to Polk students

Polk County, Florida-- Parents and guardians, if you're worried that your children's access to free and reduced meals will end with the school year, the Summer Food Service Program has you covered.

According to a release from Polk County Public Schools, the School Nutrition Department will host the program,  and provide nutritionally balanced meals to children for most of the season.

Polk County, Florida -- Mary St. Denis, a science instructor at Winter Haven High, is a “Teacher at Sea” thanks to the C-IMAGE Gulf of Mexico Teacher at Sea Program. She recently qualified to participate in the projects’ 2013 expedition focused on zooplankton survey and deep ocean sediments.

Students participate Wheelchair Awareness

Polk County, Florida -- Starting Friday, May 17, students enrolled in health science class at Winter Haven High’s Medical Academy will take part in a project called “Wheelchair Awareness.” The project requires students to spend a weekend in a wheelchair. The goal of the project is to help students gain an understanding of what it means to live with physical limitations and help them become more sensitive to future patients who may have physical handicaps.
