PRECO Charity Helps Group Home Residents Enjoy the Outdoors

Wauchula, FL — A Hardee County group home operated by Sunrise Community, Lakeland, FL, recently received $7,000 from Peace River Electric Cooperative’s “Operation Round Up” charitable foundation to create an accessible patio area and purchase a wheelchair swing.

The home’s two women and three men, ages 18 to 23, are severely physically challenged and wheelchair bound due to cerebral palsy. This project will provide shade and shelter for these residents to enjoy outdoor activities in safety.

Lakeland, FL-- George Jenkins High School will hold a Distracted Driving, "Put it Down" Assembly for teen drivers this Friday. 

According to the Dori Slosberg Foundation in partnership with Geico, Florida traffic crashes are the number one killer of teens. Reps say in 2010, 26,848 traffic crashes in Florida involved teens; 144 teens died and 18,543 teens suffered injuries.

Polk County health director to take new position

Polk County, FL-- The Florida Department of Health announced that Polk County Health Department (PCHD) Director, Dr. Daniel Haight, accepted the position of Associate Vice President of Community Health at Lakeland Regional Medical Center (LRMC). 

The transition, they say, is expected to occur over the next month, and Dr. Ulyee Choe will serve as Interim PCHD Director, as of November 19.

Polk County Fire Rescue "Cares Enough to Wear Pink"

Bartow, FL--Polk County Fire Rescue members will make breast cancer awareness a local initiative by taking part in the Pink Heals "Cares Enough to Wear Pink Campaign", a campaign embraced by EMS, Fire Rescue and Public Safety organizations nationwide. 

On Oct. 16, 17 and 18, they will hang up their traditional red, white and blue uniforms, and don pink shirts.
