Public meeting about Poinciana Park

Polk County, Florida -- Polk County Parks and Natural Resources is hosting a public meeting about Poinciana Park, a new park opening in Fall 2013 in Poinciana.

Phase I construction includes a three multi-purpose fields, restrooms, two baseball fields, a basketball court, a dog park, picnic facilities and parking. 

The discussion of the meeting will include new athletic league possibilities and rental opportunities.

Florida State Parks announces new, free mobile app

Florida-- Trees, lakes, trails, wildlife- they're all things that come to mind when thinking about Florida's parks. Techonology, smartphones and applications, howeverm are probably the last things to come to mind- until now!

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites.

County Nature Discovery Center to close for the holidays

Polk Co., FL-- Polk’s Nature Discovery Center will be closed December 22 - 25.The trails, however, will remain open the regular hours during this time.

Polk’s Nature Discovery Center is located in the Circle B Bar Reserve at 4399 Winter Lake Rd, Lakeland, FL.

DiOGi Dog Park to close for maintenance

DiOGi Dog Park to close for maintenance

Bartow, Florida -  DiOGi Dog Park will be closed for routine maintenance on Thursday, September 27.

The park will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, September 28.

DiOGi Dog Park was opened in 2007 in memory of Deputy Sheriff Vernon "Matt" Williams and his K-9 partner, DiOGi.

The park features big dog and little dog areas, agility equipment and shaded areas. The park is located on three fenced-in acres at Loyce E. Harpe Park, 500 West Carter Road in Mulberry. Admission is free.

Reminder: City of Lakeland budget hearing scheduled for Wednesday!

Lakeland, Florida-- The City of Lakeland will host a public Budget Hearing on Wednesday, September 5 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at City Hall located at 228 S. Massachusetts Avenue. The meeting will feature a presentation highlighting the upcoming Fiscal Year 2013 Budget and it will allow citizens to ask questions regarding project funding, services and City initiatives.

Preventing crime through community partnerships

Lakeland, Florda - Beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting through noon, on Saturday, September 15, area law enforcement agencies and members of the Winter Haven, Lake Wales and Lakeland NAACP Branches, will host "Preventing Crime through Community Partnerships," a Crime Prevention Expo.

The free event will be held at Polk State College, Winter Haven campus, 999 Avenue H, NE Winter Haven. 

Attendees will receive information on Gang Awareness, Drug Prevention/Awareness, Cyber Safety, and Bullying.

Public hearing on final budget and millage rates

Polk County, Florida-- A public hearing is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 4 in regards to the final budget and millage rates for fiscal year 2012- 2013 in polk County.

The public hearing will take place at 5 p.m. in the School Board Auditorium, located in the Polk County Public Schools District Office, 1915 South Floral Avenue, Bartow, FL 33803.

Considering this hearing is "public", all members of the public are welcome.
