Swan eggs stolen from 2 Lakeland parks

LAKELAND, Florida (AP) - City officials want to know who is stealing swan eggs from Lakeland parks.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports that city workers who feed and monitor the swans first noticed eggs missing from Lake Morton and Lake Mirror last week.

Director of Parks and Recreation Bob Donahay says the swans were moved to Lake Morton so officials could keep tabs on the eggs. He says up to 20 eggs are missing.

Donahay says the eggs - worth up to $150 each - were about to hatch.

The newspaper reports that Lakeland officials often find a broken swan egg or two around the parks. But this time they don't believe the eggs fell victim to vandalism. Instead, Donahay believes the thief took the eggs to hatch and sell.
